“Brazilian Consulate Visit to Roanoke”
Joslaine Austin, Chair.
On March 20th this year, we were thrilled to host the 3rd visit of the mobile service of the
Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, D. C.. We were honored to have Vice-Consul
Cyro Cardoso and Julia Glehn, and her husband Klaus, among some of the Brazilian

Consulate employees who came to assist the community. The mobile service goal is to reach out to people who reside within its jurisdiction but far from its headquarters.
As a member of this consulate’s Citizens Council, I can testify to the amazing and outstanding service that they provide to the public under the direct supervision of our Excellency Ambassador Almir Barbuda and his Secretary Bernardo Brasil. They are planning to come again next semester. We want to thank Pastor Samuel Belisle who has been opening the doors of his church to our community.Referred by the consulate, the artist Patricia Secco has confirmed her interest in representing Brazil in the Artview Contemporary International Art Exhibition. Patricia is the daughter of Luiz Fernando Secco. He is a “Catarinense”.

“Catarinense” is the name given to a person who is born in the State of Santa Catarina. Florianópolis is the Capital of Santa Catarina. Patricia is a renowned artist with an art gallery in Washington. She will be opening the “Art
Gallery of the Brazilian Consulate” there in May. Patricia will also be participating the 3rd time in the Art Biennial, this time representing our country in New York City in September.

Florianópolis

“HERE & THERE IN FLORIANOPOLIS & ROANOKE”
Norma Jean Peters and Rose Ann Burgess, Co-chairs
The Florianopolis Committee celebrated the beginning of the holiday season on December 1 with the annual holiday dinner at Luigis Restaurant. Maristane Rocha, who runs the restaurant, is Brazilian. Some Brazilian dishes and drinks are featured on the menu. Nineteen people attended the festive occasion and all agreed that the good food and great fellowship helped to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.
Among those attending were Mike & Marilia Deisenroth, who reported to the group about their impending trip to Florianopolis. The Deisenroths live in Blacksburg and have purchased a house in Florianopolis. They plan to stay in Florianopolis for three months and take advantage of the beautiful weather that the area has at this time of year.
Their future plans include spending even more time there each year. Since Marilia is Brazilian, she is very excited about that prospect. The committee looks forward to having communications from them about what is going on in Florianopolis and we hope they can help with strengthening our relationship with the Roanoke committee there.
The Deisenroths are taking a $1,000 donation from our committee for “Lar Recanto do Carinho,” an orphanage for children who are HIV positive. Our committee has an ongoing relationship with this orphanage which is called, “Loves Little Nest,” in English. The money we send helps with medical expenses and supplies for the children.
Loves Little Nest houses around 50 children and adolescents and provides assistance to families of children who have been reintegrated into their homes.
The committee recently received communication from Wendy Smith, a physical therapist in Texas. She contacted our committee seeking information about Loves Little Nest and how she and her daughter might help at the orphanage during a trip during the Christmas holidays. Mrs. Smiths daughter is a member of a soccer team which will be playing teams in Brazil. They have some free time and wish to visit the orphanage and interact with the children. They also plan to take some supplies to the children. We were pleased to give them information and try to put them in contact with Marcia Rila, director of Loves Little Nest. It is exciting to have these new contacts in Florianopolis!
