Legalization of Documents

Authentication and Legalization of Documents
For a document issued abroad to be recognized as legally valid in Brazil it is necessary to obtain the Brazilian Consulate authentication of the original document issued in its consular jurisdiction, or notarization of the signature included in the document.
· Official documents issued by the U.S. Government (e.g.: Department of Health & Human Services Certificate to Foreign Government, United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination for Small Animals issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, FBI Criminal Records Certificate, etc.) may be authenticated by submitting the original document.
· All other governmental documents and all non-governmental documents should, prior to being submitted to the Consular Service, be authenticated by the office of the Secretary of State (Secretary of State of Delaware, Secretary of State of Maryland, Secretary of State of Ohio, Secretary of State of West Virginia, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia) or by the Head of the Notary Commissions and Authentications Section of the Office of the Secretary of the District of Columbia, and/or the Authentications Office of the U.S. Department of State.
Authentication and Legalization Fees:
Fees for the authentication and legalization of documents are to be paid as follows:
· For authentication of documents to be used for purposes of school enrollment, please follow the specific instructions provided at: Diplomas and School Papers
· For legalization of documents to be used for purposes of making charitable donations, no fee is required;
· For legalization of documents to be used for any other purpose, a fee of U.S. $20.00 per document is required.
Requests for Processing Made in Person:
Requests for processing can be made in person by coming to the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, D.C.
The only form of payment acceptable by the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, D.C. for services requested in person is:
· U.S. Postal Service money order, payable to the "Consulate General of Brazil in Washington.
The consular authentication is normally processed within eight (8) working days when the document is submitted to the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington.
Requests for Processing Made by Mail:
Requests for processing can also be made by mail. For such requests, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with appropriate postage for returned documents. U.S. POSTAL SERVICE First Class, Certified, Priority, or Express Mail is recommended. Documents will neither be received nor returned via Federal Express or United Parcel Service. The Consulate will not be held responsible for loss or delay of mailed documents.
The only form of payment accepted by the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington requested via mail is U.S. Postal Service Money Order, payable to the “Consulate General of Brazil.”
The consular authentication is normally processed within ten (10) working days when the document is submitted to the Consulate by mail.
